THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

The Auxiliary Unit 49, affiliated with the Carlisle B. Grisham Post 49, is an active and socially minded group of ladies who enjoy being together and of service to others. They are an integral part of Post operations, participating in their own fund raising efforts, charitable works, and the support of patriotic events. Auxiliary Unit 49 accepts donations from the public for Buddy Poppies in conjunction with the local annual Memorial Day celebration to support disabled veterans. The Auxiliary works with Post 49 Legionnaires on chicken stew events and the annual pancake breakfasts to raise their own funds for charitable work. The Auxiliary Unit meets at 7 PM on the first Thursday of each month (except December) at the American Legion Post 49 building on Cloverleaf Drive, Athens (see the LOCATION Tab on this website).

The American Legion Auxiliary was created at the National American Legion Convention in 1919, and Unit 49, Athens, Alabama has existed and served this community for many years. The American Legion perceived it as only natural that women of veteran’s families should desire to serve with their veterans. The American Legion thus provided an organization for mothers, wives, sisters, granddaughters or great-granddaughters, and for female veterans who desire membership (female veterans are also welcome as members of the American Legion). Each Auxiliary unit is separately chartered. Eligibility for membership is based on periods of service by the veteran sponsor, which is equivalent to the time periods governing membership in the American Legion. So, interested individuals should see the service periods for veterans listed under the MEMBERSHIP tab on this website. Interested individuals should contact Mrs. Clara Claxton, telephone number (256) 232-2895.

Like the American Legion Post 49 members, the members of Auxiliary Unit 49 participate in events and programs that promote Americanism and they are also very interested in helping young people. The Auxiliary Unit 49 is active in the award of scholarships and the sponsorship each year of Girls State. Girls State is an event and program which is similar to Boy’s State; however, it is hosted at a separate location, Troy State University. Also, Auxiliary members assist with the annual Memorial Day Service and other Americanism and patriotic events hosted by Post 49.

The photograph above pictures the 2011 Limestone County Girls State delegates. The photo was made at the joint orientation for both the girls and the delegates to Boys State, which is conducted at the Post home in May every year. High junior class girls who are interested in this program should contact their school counselor for information and express their interest to participate. If interested students are not able to obtain information through the appropriate high school counselor then they should contact the person listed at the end of this paragraph. Home schooled students, equivalent to a junior class standing, are also eligible for participation consideration. They should contact the person listed at the end of this paragraph. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49 Program Coordinator is Mary Duncan, telephone (256) 233-1257.
